Once again, the Montioni wines were a huge standout in my Montefalco tastings. From the Rosso to the Sagrantino, this portfolio exudes elegance, boasting fleshy fruits and zesty acidity, perfectly balancing those traditional gruff tannins. What’s more, the radiance of the 2019 vintage is on full display in the current releases. The farm started its operations in 1978 with a focus on olive oil. In the early 2000s, Paolo Montioni, representing the third generation of winemakers in the family, began modernizing their practices and building a new underground cellar. Today, the winery follows natural protocols in the vineyards and winery, including spontaneous fermentations. While barrel aging for the bigger wines takes place in new French barrique, the integration is flawless. The seductive reds of Montioni are not to be missed.
