Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto's 2012s capture the richness and radiance of the 2012 vintage. Then again, Montepeloso is in Suvereto, where the wines are naturally opulent. Over the last few months, the 2012s have come together nicely. Still, my preference would be to drink the 2012s sooner rather than later. One of the evolutions here in recent years has been the introduction of 450-liter barrels. Given the natural intensity of these wines, limiting the exchange with oxygen is a sensible strategy in trying to maintain as much freshness as possible while keeping the wines from being overly heavy. The 2012s are at times on the blowsy side of things.
