After a good performance in the excellent 2005 vintage, Dr. Carl von Schubert and his winemaker Stefan Kraml have done an even better job in the infinitely more difficult 2006 vintage. There is not a poor wine in the lot. These rieslings may not have quite the depth of those from last year, but they are a moving interpretation of the vintage at every level of quality. For those who don't know such wines, I suggest you try the Abtsberg Superior. Although technically an off-dry auslese, this is what the finest rieslings tasted like 50 years ago. Dry in flavor, it should age well over the next 20 years and is, among all the wines below, the one that is easiest to pair with food at a meal. If 2007, which Dr. von Schubert describes as "an extremely delicate and finely nuanced vintage," lives up to expectations, this estate will again be not only the Ruwer's benchmark, but one of the finest examples of what the Mosel can produce in any vintage.
