Andrea Machetti describes 2011 as a vintage of extremes. The early summer was unusually cool, something that was especially dramatic here, in the hills above Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where the soils and vines are used to warmer temperatures. According to Machetti, the short August heat wave was not enough to restore balance in the vines, but it did result in a loss of 30% of the crop through dehydration. Mastrojanni's 2011s look to be early drinking wines and should be enjoyed sooner rather than later. I am not sure this was a vintage to give the wines three years in cask.
