Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer showed me their 2003s and 2004s this March, as they have been speeding up their release schedule after falling behind in recent years and plan to get the '04s to their mailing-list customers by the fall of 2007. As usual, those lucky enough to be on the Marcassin list will be able to enjoy some of California's most stunning pinots and chardonnays from these two vintages.

I was especially impressed by the trio of 2004 zinfandels here. According to Lee Martinelli, the vineyard team goes to great lengths to counter the zinfandel cluster's tendency toward irregular ripening. In addition to simply reducing the number of clusters, the Martinellis actually remove pink berries and the shoulders of the clusters three or four times during the course of the summer, as well as eliminate sunburned fruit. These latter steps were especially important in 2004, Martinelli explained, because the flowering for zin was uneven and the cluster count was high.
