The talented Herold will make a cabernet sauvignon under his new label from the 2010 vintage, following a three-year hiatus owing to the sale of his Merus brand to Foley Family Wines in late 2007. In the meantime, he offers three offbeat wines under the Merus label: an albarino, a blend based on tempranillo, and a blend based on grenache. For his tempranillo, Herold has been bringing in budwood from Pingus in Ribera del Duero. Herold describes 2010 as cooler than 2009. "The summer started warm, then fizzled out," he told me, noting that it was a later harvest than the previous year.
