Is Manni Nössing one of Italy’s top fifteen or so winemakers? The thought immediately springs to mind when tasting his lineup of Sylvaner, Grüner Veltliner, Kerner, and Müller-Thurgau wines. The Sylvaner, especially, reaches levels of purity, precision and age-worthiness uncommon in all but the world’s finest examples of this white wine.

I visited Manni Nossing in August 2011. Like many of his colleagues, Nossing is working hard to deal with the effects of warmer growing season. Part of the changes here over the last few years included allowing yields to be slightly higher and leaving a little more leaf cover, both done with the aim of capturing as much freshness as possible. Nossing's 2011s are quite a bit bigger and richer than the 2010s, reflecting the personality of the year. Ideally, they are all enjoyed sooner rather than later.
