The Spencer family, which owns about one-fifth of Waiheke Island, purchased most of this land in the 1980s. The land is still used mostly for grazing cattle and sheep but 4% is devoted to grapes. The Spencers now have 150 acres of vines planted, most of them put in between 2002 and 2004. )The property actually came with some vineyards planted in the late '80s on the flattest land, but those vines were pulled up, according to CEO Duncan McTavish.)

Man O' War works with a number of varieties, both whites and reds, and also makes a sparkling wine, producing about 25,000 cases annually, including 10% Chardonnay. In recent years, they've been grafting some Bordeaux varieties over to Syrah, which does well on Waiheke Island, and Syrah will ultimate represent 25% of Man O' War's total production.
