Vineyard manager/winemaker Sylvain Debord pointed out that although the Côte de Nuits generally enjoyed more phenolic ripeness than the Côte de Beaune did in 2014, that was not necessarily accompanied by higher grape sugars. In fact, Nicolas Potel started harvesting on the Côte de Beaune on September 13 with potential alcohol levels around 12. 5% and did virtually no chaptalization. Incidentally, Debord compared the Bellene 2013s to the 2011s, and he believes the ’13s will be for drinking before the ’14s. The wines that I tasted in finished form in mid-December had been bottled at the beginning of that month.
