MAHA is the estate project of JoAnn and Cris Cherry, who are best known for the wines they make at Villa Creek, which for many years have been some of the best in Paso Robles. The Cherrys started planting their home property on Peachy Canyon Road in 2012. The vines have now matured to the point where the Cherrys feel they are able to make enough wine to justify separating the resulting wines from those under the flagship Villa Creek label. And serious wines they are. The emphasis here is on energy and definition, although there is plenty of weight and power to the wines as well, but not in the stereotypical Paso Robles sense. Oak influence is reined in, and these 2018 red bottlings show superb clarity, with the balance to age, despite coming from young vines. Look for the MAHA wines to be among the best from the region in a short time – they are already up there.
