Baudana, managed by the Vaira family since 2009, is one of the most under-the-radar estates in all of Piedmont. I have thought that for some time, but tasting a number of wines at last year's Festa del Barolo only served to reinforce that view. The 2021 Barolos are especially fine. I was so impressed with the elegance of the tannins in these wines. Vajra now moves their sorting table to Baudana for the harvest, which likely explains why these wines are so precise and pure. The Barolos are fermented in wood uprights and stainless steel, with extended macerations in excess of 40 days. Aging is done in cask. I can't recommend the 2021s highly enough. Readers who have become fatigued by pricing for some of Piedmont's more renowned wines would do quite well to take a close look at Baudana.
