I was super-impressed with the wines I tasted at Lone Madrone this year. Winemaker Neil Collins may be better known for the wines he makes at Tablas Creek, but Collins is doing equally compelling work at Lone Madrone with his sister, Jackie Meisinger. Above all else, the Lone Madrone wines are unique and quite distinct within the Paso Robles landscape. The focus is mostly on Rhône varieties, with some surprises thrown in. Winemaking is pretty stripped down to the bare essentials. Some of the wine see oak aging, especially at the top end of the range, but cooperage always plays a supporting rather than principal role in shaping these wines. Best of all, these wines remain exceedingly fairly priced in today's market.
