Les Carmes Haut-Brion, a walled vineyard within the Bordeaux city limits, is one of the most striking sites in the entire region. Among other things, the combination of soils, walls and general surroundings creates a warm, precocious site. The high percentage of Cabernet Franc is another unusual feature. Winemaker Guillaume Pouthier cares for the land like a garden. In the cellar, Pouthier uses a fair amount of whole clusters, which is highly unusual in Bordeaux, and is not afraid to push the boundaries. A set of terra-cotta amphoras are the latest addition to the winery. Pouthier's first vintage here was 2012. It is too soon to know how his Carmes will age, but the first wines have been deeply impressive.
