Christoph Künzli is one of the architects of the Renaissance of Alto Piemonte. Over the last 25 years, Künzli has built one of the most highly regarded wineries in all of Italy. Künzli was first attracted to the region through the wines of Antonio Cerri, one of the historic figures in Boca. In 1998, Künzli bought Cerri’s 0.5-hectare vineyard. Over the years, Künzli painstakingly built Le Piane through a series of small acquisitions necessitated by the highly parcellated ownership of vineyards in the region. Minimalist winemaking and long aging in cask are the rules. Le Piane represents the best of the artisan tradition in Alto Piemonte. These are reference-point wines. Readers who can find them should not hesitate. For those with an interest, I also highly recommend a visit.
