La Ca' Nova remains one of the true undiscovered jewels of Barbaresco. Proprietor Marco Rocca crafts intense, classically proportioned Barbarescos full of personality. The Barbarescos see about 25 days on the skins and spend 18-20 months in cask. In 2013, the harvest took place between October 10 and 15, which is typical for the year. I also had a chance to revisit the 2012s, which are so different today I can only conclude the bottles I tasted last year were damaged in transit. Overall, the 2013s will need a bit of time to come together, while the 2012s are much more open and accessible, in part because of their mid-weight structures. Best of all, pricing remains very fair in the world of hand-crafted, artisan wines.

Marco Rocca farms choice parcels in Montestefano and Montefico, two of the very best sites in Piedmont. As always, the Ca' Nova Barbarescos are big, powerful wines, but the 2012s are also a bit more rustic and rough around the edges than has been the case in recent vintages. Some wines show a slightly roasted quality, while the tannins are unyielding. It will be interesting to see if the wines come together a little more in bottle. As this stage, the wines are decidedly awkward.
