American businessman Anthony Hwang, who also owns Domaine Huet in Vouvray, bought this historic estate ("King's Court") in Tarcal in 1997 and reopened it in 1999 after an extensive renovation. Szabolcs Juhász has been in charge of winemaking since 2008. Prior to that, the Királyudvar wines were made by Istvan Szepsy (through 2005) and Zoltán Demeter (until early 2008). The estate owns vineyards in Mád and Bodrogkeresztúr, currently making wine from 45 hectares of wines, all farmed organically (they will be certified biodynamic as of 2015). Juhász believes that organic viticulture gives stronger natural yeasts as well as higher and finer acidity. Replanting of vines has been minimal here in recent years and average vine age is now in the 35 to 40 year range. Everything here is vinified in oak, then assembled in tanks, with all but the aszú wines bottled in June after the harvest. These wines have uncanny drinkability.
