Only four wines were ready to taste from Jutta Ambrositsch, with the remaining whites still fermenting. There is news of new sites: Ambrositsch has taken over vineyards previously farmed by her stepsister on the Csaterberg in Südburgenland, on a spur of the Eisenberg, with schist soils and inclusions of serpentinite. The three southeast-facing blocks are planted to Blaufränkisch, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder, Chardonnay and Müller-Thurgau and will be made into three wines under the Wælder label (meaning “forests,” as the vineyards border deep woodland). Regarding 2024, Ambrositsch said, “Thank heavens we had enough water for once, and no hail at all.” She recalled, “There was a lot of heat in April, cool weather during flowering, and a relatively normal summer with intermittent rain.” Picking finished before the September rains, with only Riesling left, which was harvested in October following “a lovely second half of September.” The 2024 wines are as expressive and individualistic as ever.
