Alois Meyer, a négociant and winemaker, founded the Josmeyer estate in 1854. This remained the business model until 1999 when Jean Meyer, grandson of Alois, decided to convert the vineyards to organic and biodynamic farming. Both certifications, by Ecocert and Biodyvin, were granted in 2004. Jean Meyer’s eldest daughter Isabelle, today’s winemaker, studied viticulture and oenology in Rouffach and Montpellier, with a stage at Domaine Huet in Vouvray. Isabelle Meyer worked her first vintage at home in 1993, and her younger sister Céline Meyer joined the estate in 2004. The sisters run the estate together, with Céline looking after the commercial side and the vineyards. They have 24 hectares/59 acres under vine, all within 5km of the estate, across 95 plots in Wettolsheim, Wintzenheim and Turckheim. The wines are exported to 25 countries. The sisters have carved a niche for their bold yet sleek, dry wines that brim with fruit and texture.
