John Duval, who grew up in the Barossa Valley on his family's vineyard, worked at Penfolds for 29 years, serving as chief winemaker there from 1986 until his retirement in 2002. He now produces a relatively small quantity of elegant, mostly low-octane, judiciously oaked wines from grapes he purchases from selected growers in the Barossa. His wines are usually approachable soon after release but they also age gracefully; they have found a receptive audience of wine lovers as well as sommeliers who normally shy away from the large-scaled wines of the Barossa.
