If Egon Muller is the star of the Saar, then Joh. Jos. Prum must take that honor for the Mosel. With more than 50 vintages under his belt, Dr. Manfred Prum is not only the grand old man of the region, but certainly-with his inimitable style-its guiding light. His wines are often difficult to understand in their youth, but blossom with age, turning into angels' nectar. Two thousand nine was obviously an auslese vintage here, with three of this estate's offerings being among the handful of finest wines made in that style in 2009. But a kabinett and spatlese also made the cut for editor's choice. Impressive!
