Starting with the 2019 vintage, the estate wines’ name will change from “Jean-Luc Colombo” to “Domaine Colombo”, including the negociant and Provence range. Before, it wasn’t very clear, so I think it’s a smart and practical move to make a differentiation when producers expand their portfolios to add non-domaine wines. Laure Colombo is fully in charge and doing excellent work here, still with the benefit of Jean-Luc and Anne’s (father and mother) continuing engagement with the winery. Laure Colombo’s winemaking style leans more toward elegance than was practiced here in the past. This results in more accessible wines with less weight, oak influence and tannic structure. Colombo’s 2020s, 2019s and 2018s (bottled under the old Jean-Luc Colombo label but made by Laure) are extremely high-quality across the board.

Laure Colombo’s 2018s are a reflection of the hot growing season, she said, “and the fruit is dark in character, but you don’t see a roasted character, and the tannins should marry well in a few years.” She said that “maybe you could call it a mix of 2017, for the richness, with 2016, for the energy of the fruit.”
