Over the last thirty-five years, the inimitable Dean Hewitson built a significant operation in Barossa following vintages in France, the USA and study at UC Davis. Hewitson’s French experience, in particular, saw him take a more reserved approach to his wines than some of his contemporaries, promoting varietal and regional character. That continues to this day. The wines are less showy than many other local offerings. A key plank of Hewitson’s range is his access to exceedingly old vine fruit and clonal material. The benchmark Mourvèdre, based on the Old Garden Vineyard, was planted in 1853, the oldest of this variety in the world.
