Michael Havens, whose merlot-based wines and syrah number among California top half-dozen wines in each category, was excited about the quality of the '97 vintage in March. This year, which featured very good overall warmth but not the harvest-time heat of '96, brought more even ripening than '96 or '95, according to Havens, and hang time almost as long as that of '94. The pHs in '97 are lower than those of the previous year, but Havens points out that pHs in '96 were very high. Incidentally, the vines from which Havens has made sauvignon blanc will be replanted due to phylloxera (the '97 will probably be the last vintage from the current vines), but Havens may have another white wine in the near future, as he is planting albario in the northeast corner of Carneros.
