Guido Porro's 2010 Barolos are fabulous. Readers who want to understand the true nature of what makes Nebbiolo such a compelling variety would do well to check out these three translucent, super-expressive Barolos. The 2010s spent 2-3 weeks on the skins in cement, with native fermentations. Porro let the wines settle in vat for a few months, then racked them into cask, where they spent three full years. The 2010s were just bottled in May of this year, so they are still tight. Even so, the wines are beyond beautiful. These may be the best wines I have ever tasted from Guido Porro. Looking ahead, as one of Tommaso Canale's heirs, Porro received a choice parcel in Vigna Rionda. The first crop should be coming off that site in 2014. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how many years these recently planted vines need before they produce Rionda-level Barolo.
