Sarolta Bardos has succeeded in honing increasingly expressive and refined wines worthy of both their famed terroir and of the ambitious and meticulous replanting of vineyards that proceeds at this estate. (For details, please consult Issue 86.) Nowhere has her sensitive and experimental approach been more obviously fruitful than in the production of dry furmint, a category in which Degenfeld (along with Oremus) now clearly makes one of the two best. The Degenfeld Aszu wines, which are now aged in newish, 220‑liter Hungarian oak barrels, typically utilize a base wine of around 60/40 furmint/harslevel_. As new plantings mature, the estate envisions single‑site Tokaji Aszu from at least their most famous cru, the Terezia vineyard in which the winery is located.
