The Vajra family has done a magnificent job with their 2010 Barolos. This year, for the first time, Vajra is releasing their Barolo Ravera, a wine that had previously been bulked out when the vines were young. Stylistically, the Ravera is a bit less polished than the flagship Bricco delle Viole, but in top vintages it can be thrilling, as is the case in 2010. Vajra is no longer the small winery it once was. The purchase of Baudana a few years back and increased production of the entry-level wines make Vajra one of the larger of the artisan, family-run estates in Piedmont. Throughout that growth Vajra has not skipped a beat. Every wine in the range is terrific, but the Barolos, well, they are special.

I have had many fabulous tastings at Vajra over the years, but this was one of the most memorable, as I had a chance to sample a wide range of Barolos spanning vintages 2010-2013. The only wine in bottle is the 2010 Barolo Albe. At the moment, the 2010 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is sitting in three casks that correspond to the different sections of the vineyard. The final blend has not been made, and it is also not a foregone conclusion that 100% of each cask will make it into the finished wine. Still, the three casks are all impressive and point to a wine with a bright future. Vajra continues to vinify a Barolo from their parcel in Ravera, where the vines are now 14-15 years old. So far, the Ravera has been sold in bulk, but there is a big step up in quality with the 2012 and 2013, so I will not be surprised if those wines are eventually bottled. Actually, all of the 2012s and 2013s are impressive here, and easily confirm Vajra's position in the top echelon of Barolo producers today. I can't say enough about the Vajra family and all they have accomplished, especially over the last decade. When I stopped by on a late Saturday afternoon, the tasting room was occupied by a large group. How many world-class wineries can you visit on a Saturday afternoon with a group? The answer is not many. In a world that is increasingly about noise and hype, the Vajras work out of a very functional, simple winery just outside Barolo, driven by the values of family, faith and the strong work ethic that is at the heart of the Piedmontese culture.
