This winery, which has never veered from its dedication to dry riesling, was one of the pioneers of organic viticulture. However, since its purchase by the Ahr Foundation in 1994 the wines have varied from excellent in 1997 and 1999 to quite mediocre in vintages like 2000 and 2002.Carsten Ahr has now taken the helm and appears bent on restoring Heyl's reputation to its former glory. His first full effort in 2004 indicates that he is on the right path.In particular, the Brudersberg Grosses Gewachs is one of the best dry rieslings that this estate has made in some time and ranks with the finest produced in the vintage.(Valckenberg International) Also recommended: 2004 Weisser Burgunder Trocken Rotschiefer (87), 2004 Riesling Trocken Baron Heyl (85), 2004 Riesling Kabinett Feinherb (86).
