While many collectors look to the Red Mountain and Walla Walla Cabernets and the more Merlot-dominated Épinette as Force Majeure’s core wines, the Rhône varieties are not to be missed. Winemaker Todd Alexander works primarily with Syrah, although the GSM red blend Paravata is also of note. Fruit for these wines is sourced from estate vineyards in Red Mountain and directly behind the Force Majeure winery, right outside of the Rocks District. Both are gorgeous, with Red Mountain bringing the power and the Walla Walla fruit adding more elegance. The third Syrah uses purchased fruit from the SJR vineyard, and it screams Rocks terroir from the glass. Alexander prefers large barrels with only a small amount of new oak, going only as high as 33%, along with varying percentages of whole cluster fermentation. The 2020s are fabulous, without any sign of smoke taint. If anything, they showed more openness than expected, yet are still complex and balanced. I couldn’t help but include the Tempranillo (also from Red Mountain) in the following notes, because it’s a total knock-out. This year will be Todd Alexander’s tenth vintage with Force Majeure.
