The Fonterenza winery and vineyards are located southwest of Montalcino proper, in the hills of Sant’Angelo in Colle. It was here, in 1997, that twin sisters returned to their family’s farmhouse and decided to begin planting Sangiovese. Their vineyards, growing in a mix of clay, limestone, sandstone and schist, have only ever been farmed organically, with a move toward biodynamics over the last few years. This non-interventionist approach continues in the cellar, using natural yeasts, long macerations, and aging in a mix of neutral botti with some tonneaux. Margherita and Francesca Padovani are happy to keep things small, which probably has a lot to do with how personal and soulful I found the wines to be.
