On the day of my visit here, Fred Fisher had just restructured his winemaking team, partly as a result of shrinking production. Fisher will release just 4,400 cases of wine this year (a consistently good set of '98 whites and '97 reds), down from an average production of nearly 8,000 in recent years. There will be no Wedding Vineyard bottling in '98, as the fruit from this estate vineyard, planted in 1974, did not ripen properly; Fisher had not decided whether to declassify the Lamb Vineyard cabernet. In addition to below-average yields in '99 and '98, Fisher had to pull up 17 acres of vines planted in Napa Valley in '95, '96 and '97 due to a fungus in the rootstock. The newly replanted vines will produce their first crop in 2000. For the foreseeable future, Fisher will operate without a full-time winemaker, having just hired Mia Klein as consulting winemaker.
