Feudi di San Gregorio demonstrates that large-scale production does not necessarily result in poor quality. Granted, Feudi di San Gregorio conducts various experiments with their massive production of white wines, including creating a micro-parcelization of their estate’s 300 hectares of vineyards and vinifying each of them separately. Their house, Sannio Falanghina, totals an average of 1.5 million bottles a year, making up half of the winery's production while maintaining an incredibly high level of quality at its price point. This allows owner Antonio Capaldo to fund his FeudiStudi project (a study of terroir) and a host of other small production bottlings that overperform from vintage to vintage. This work has also resulted in a four-volume encyclopedia of Irpinia, including a history of the region, varieties, winemaking and descriptions of sub-zones and the vineyards of Feudi di San Gregorio. While this work is branded and focused on the region from the winery’s perspective, it makes for an excellent resource regarding the region as a whole. Many of the wines included in this report are small-batch productions that range in the 100-200 case range. These small bottlings may inspire other producers to take a similar stance on the importance of terroir.
