This is a terrific set of wines from Andy Erickson and Annie Favia. The 2013 Napa Valley wines are every bit as impressive as they were last year, and the 2014s are right behind them. Intensity and opulence are two of the signatures here. The wines are big, but the Cerro Sur and Magdalena are also intensely perfumed, as they both incorporate significant amounts of Cabernet Franc. At times, the Amador wines get lost in this range, but they are also gorgeous and well worth considering.

Favia was another of the many highlights of my October tastings. Winemaker Andy Erickson and his wife, the celebrated viticulturist Annie Favia, have turned out a set of compelling wines. The 2012s are rich and opulent, with ripeness pushed to the edge in some cases. I admit I have a preference for the 2013s, which offer better balance as they have a level of pulsating vibrancy that complement their inherent intensity perfectly and elevates the wines into the stratosphere. The 2013s are simply extraordinary wines built on energy and pure visceral thrill. Readers will not want to miss them. In 2013, Erickson and Favia have separated their Cabernet Sauvignon sources and plan to bottle two Cabernet Sauvignons rather than one, as was their practice previously.
