The Perrin family, owners of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's famed Château de Beaucastel, have invested in Gigondas in a big way in recent years. Their commitment is already delivering huge dividends for Rhône wine lovers. Their first foray into the region was with the 2003 vintage, when they introduced the La Gille bottling, from a single, 10.5-hectare, sand- and river-stone-topped limestone site that sits just behind the village. That was followed by the Clos de Tourelles, from a 10-hectare vineyard that sits at the entrance to the village, and the L'Argenée, which is from a sandy, one-hectare vineyard of pre-phylloxera vines that are now over a century old. The Perrins also own what is, to my mind, the top restaurant in the entire region, l'Oustalet. Housed in a historic building smack in the middle of town, l'Oustalt has been under various ownerships over the decades, but under the Perrins’ watch it has risen to an entirely higher level, with a wine list to match. Unfortunately, it's a tiny and extremely popular destination, so reservations are a must and not easy to get, especially during the late spring and summer tourist seasons.
