The 2021 vintage played right into the hands of winemaker Jordan Fiorentini at Epoch. This estate's portfolio typically has a more classic and cool-toned feel, found through a mix of vines planted on high elevations, closer proximity to the Pacific and deft use of oak. Epoch’s vineyards include sites in the York Mountain AVA at 1,500 feet and Willow Creek District within Paso Robles. Driving from Paso to the winery on York Mountain, there is a quick temperature drop. Comparing the Syrah York Mountain to the Syrah Block B from Willow Creek is a perfect lesson in terroir. Another standout of this tasting is the inaugural vintage of The Statesman, a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux blend from Willow Creek. In 2021, with higher average precipitation and no significant heat spikes, it’s not surprising that Fiorentini was able to achieve such an amazing balance in each of these wines. This portfolio will appeal to lovers of both the Old and the New World.
