After all these years, Elio Altare has become a classic. Daughter Silvia Altare makes the wines pretty much the same way her father always did. I find that level of conviction refreshing, as it is rare in a world where so many producers chase the latest fashion. The Altare Barolos see relatively short fermentations and are aged in French oak, a tool the Altares have mastered for Nebbiolo with uncanny skill. The 2019s are rich, deep and highly expressive of place. They are pretty impressive wines for my palate. Silvia Altare told me she considers 2019 warmer than 2018.
