El Esteco is the largest and most imposing of the wineries in the Calchaquí Valley. It was built in 1982 by Michel Torino. Purchased in 1999 by the Peñaflora Group and converted into El Esteco, the winery harvests grapes from century-old vineyards in Cafayate and a newer one in Chañar Punco (planted in the late 1990s). The oenological team led by Alejandro Pepa has undertaken the effort to reinvent Calchaquí wine. Their multiple brands Old Vines, El Esteco Extremos and experiments with Partidas Limitadas (Limited Editions) are proof of their success.
