Steve Edmunds has faced the same challenge as any California winemaker who relies largely on purchased fruit, but the need to replace lost sources has presented an opportunity as well. Edmunds lost his Brandlin Ranch mourvedre and carignan after the '96 vintage but hopes soon to make a new wine in the style of Les Cotes Sauvages from Central Coast fruit. And there are a flood of new syrah sources on the horizon. Edmunds' new Parmalee Hill bottling is from a hillside section of Durell Vineyard recently purchased and planted by Steve Hill, vineyard foreman at Durell. Edmunds will also get syrah fruit from another Steve Hill property north of Durell beginning in 2001. In addition, he is a partner in an El Dorado syrah vineyard planted at an altitude of 3,300 feet. Current plans are to expand production from the current 4,000 cases per year to 10,000 or more by 2005.
