Karl-Heinz Wehrheim's 2012 Mandelberg Pinot Blanc Grosses Gewächs was again the finest white pinot produced in the vintage in Germany. That surprises few insiders there. But in America not very many collectors think that pinot blanc can be as good as--not to mention better than--chardonnay or pinot gris, but in the southern Palatinate it can. While the pinot blanc has long been Wehrheim's signature wine, his rieslings and pinot noirs have gained in stature, making him, across the board, one of the most reliable producers in the region. With his son Franz now at his side, his beautiful estate is upping the ante.
