These current releases from Donelan are centered around the 2017 Syrahs, which got an extra year in bottle, while release dates for the other wines I would have normally tasted have been pushed back. The 2017 Syrahs are the product of an extremely challenging year in which fires reached within 150 feet of the winery. Two blocks at Kobler were lost, as was all of the Obsidian vineyard, but in that case the fruit had already been picked. The 2017s are a bit rough around the edges - as most wines are in this vintage - yet benefit quite a bit from a few hours of air. As always, the Donelan family's unrelenting pursuit of quality is impressive.
