For the first time, Thomas Morey picked significantly earlier than his brother Vincent, beginning with his Batard-Montrachet on August 28 at 12.4% potential alcohol (Vincent picked his Batard on September 3 at 13.7%). Thomas chaptalized the wine to 13%, noting that he's not interested in making wines with 13.5% alcohol. He also cut his use of new oak to 20% in 2015, not only because he thought it was the right choice for very ripe wines from a sunny year but also "to avoid oxidation and to lengthen the life of my wines." Too much new oak, he now believes, "equals premature oxidation." Morey describes 2015 as "good to very good but not great--to drink young."
