Les Goubert is one of the appellation’s most venerable domaines. It was founded in 1636 and has remained in the same family. The wines today show a good deal of polish, in a positive way, with just the right degree of earthiness and grip to remind of their origins. The Gigondas is made with de-stemmed fruit save for the Syrah, which is fermented with all whole clusters. The Cuvée Florence, the fancy bottling, is raised entirely in barriques, 50% of them new, for a full two years. After release, the wine shows a decidedly modern style for a while, but patience is rewarded in spades. Both the 2018 and 2019 versions, the current releases, are superb and in the upper tier of bottlings from those vintages. Fortunately, more than a decent amount is made in typical years, so the wines are not unreasonably or maddeningly difficult to track down.
