When I visited here in mid-November Julien Barrot was "99% sure" that there would not be a Pure bottling from 2008 and that the juice normally reserved for that cuvee would be blended into his other bottlings. As for 2007, even the basic Terroir bottling clocks in at 16.4% alcohol and the grenache for the Signature, which makes up 60% of the blend, checked in at over 17%. Barrot told me that as time goes by he is becoming a big fan of the 2004 vintage as "the wines are complete, with great fruit and acidity, fine tannins and, most of all, balance. Massive isn't better but sometimes that's what the year gives us, like in 2003, 2005 and 2007." There seems to be a misconception among some winos regarding how these wines are made, with many people lumping Barrot's wines into the modern school of Chateauneuf. For the record, the wines here are raised in a combination of one-to-five-year-old 225- and 350-liter barrels, old foudres and concrete tanks. The smaller casks are used exclusively for syrah and mourvedre and the old foudres for grenache.
