Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is a domaine that I have followed for several years, like their neighbor Pierre Duroché. The domaine is a case example of a property being passed to the next generation, Florence and Simon Heresztyn-Mazzini, resulting in an almost immediate upswing in quality. “The 2018 vintage is the last year for the conversion to organic farming and in 2019 we will be officially certified with AB," Florence Mazzini told me. "It was a difficult season in the springtime. We had trouble with the mildew in the warm and wet conditions, consequently we lost around 20% of the production, which was a bit disappointing as other say they have good quantities. We have two dates of harvest. We started on 1 September for the Chambolle and waited a few days for the Bourgogne Blanc, then started in Gevrey on 8 September and finished around 13/14 September. For many cuvées we increased the whole bunch, a few to 100%. When we saw the weather we decided to do that, mainly to impart more freshness and also increasing the mid-palate volume and length. It gives the wines more lift. The highest alcohol is for the Bourgogne Rouge at 13.77%. The village crus are raised in up to 30% new oak, up to around 50% for the Grand Crus, paying attention to the toastiness of the wood."
