Yields for the Giraud vineyards were around 26 hl/ha in 2011, which Marie Giraud called "high for us but low for most growers, in the big picture."She told me that the estate's vines achieved "100% flowering, with no coulure," and that because of the preponderance of old vines in their holdings they had to do less green-harvesting than most producers. This is not to say that it was "a vintage that took care of you, like 2009 and 2010", she cautioned, "because you had to watch closely for rot and manage your canopies well.It was definitely a vineyard year."The defining character of 2010, "what makes it a great year," she told me, "is the blend of depth and freshness, which is extremely rare. Then you have the healthy tannins in harmony with the fruit, not standing on top of it."
