Ghislaine Barthod carried out a bit less extraction in 2001 due to the thickness of the grape skins. It wasn't a really sunny summer, especially in August and early September, but there was little rot in our vineyards in either 2001 or 2000," she reported. The wines have a mineral toughness, but the hillside parcels produced grapes with a bit more phenolic ripeness." Barthod feels her young 2001s show better balance and more structure than her 2000s, which she describes as "rich and full, but also elegant and seductive, with their richness hiding the lack of acidity."

"The year 2000 shows the refined, elegant, silky side of pinot noir, while the '99s, with their blacker fruits, are almost atypically powerful," noted Ghislaine Barthod. "The skins in 2000 were more fragile, and with warm temperatures at the time of the harvest, the grapes gained in sugar but lost acidity." Some of the fruit here reached 13% potential alcohol, and Barthod did less chaptalization in 2000 than in 1999. Yields were around 42 hectoliters per hectare in 2000, about 10% lower than those of the previous year. Barthod '99s rank among her two or three strongest vintages to date, but they will need time to express themselves.
