I recall last year’s visit to Domaine Drouhin and my first tasting of the Chardonnay Arthur. At the time, Veronique Drouhin and her assistant winemaker, Aaron Bell, discussed the merits of the 2022 vintage. Bell explained that it was a cool and wet spring, with the Dundee Hills falling victim to the spring frost. Drouhin reported that they lost between 30-35% of their Chardonnay production. As for Pinot Noir, the loss was much less significant, somewhere around 5-8%. June was followed by moderate temperatures in the summer and an October where they were blessed with the most unbelievable conditions—no more than 78-80°F. The season ended up being one of the latest on record for them, from October 7-20.

The 2022s are cool-toned and classic, nearly crunchy in feel, with brilliant acidity. As fantastic as the Louise, Laurène and Edition Limitée are, check out the Pinot Noir Dundee Hills. This is easily one of the region's best values, showing an early approachability and the capacity to mature beautifully over time. As always, there is undoubtedly an Old-World feel to the portfolio at Domaine Drouhin, one of the many things that set them apart from most producers and helps to maintain their status as one of the absolute best wineries in the region.
