Julien Brechet has quickly climbed to the top tier of not just the Gigondas quality ladder but that of the whole Rhône Valley, as these wines from 2018 and 2017 will readily attest. On that subject, if you can put your hands on any of his superb 2016s, by all means do it. Brechet’s ability to blend depth and finesse consistently impresses, and the wines’ polished tannins make them deceptively approachable. I find his 100% Syrah (made from vines whose cuttings came from Château de Fonsalette and Jean-Louis Chave) and 100% Mourvèdre (from Domaine Tempier cuttings) bottlings to be especially intriguing and well worth following.
