I chose not to comment on Charlopin's 2012 last month as the wines were in every possible stage of their élevage in November, with some of them in the middle of their malolactic fermentations. (According to Yann Charlopin, the family took three weeks to pick in '13 with a small team and did not finish until October 30!) Prior to my tasting of 2013s, I was able to try a few 2012s, but only one cru. The crop was tiny in 2012, according to Charlopin--barely 20 hectolters per hectare--and he believes that the wines have the balance and concentration to age well.

This is a beautiful set of wines from Philippe and Yann Charlopin. The Charlopin wines sit on the richer, textured side of things in Burgundy. Because of that, I thought the 2012s might be very heavy, but instead they are actually beautifully balanced and harmonious. In particular, a number of the village wines are terrific. At the other end of the spectrum, the wines came across as a bit more reticent and not yet totally put together, which is not unusual in this vintage. Specifically, the Mazis and Bonnes-Mares were too akward to properly evaluate.
