According to Guy Davis, "the pH levels in 2011 were absolutely perfect so the wines have great definition and life." That fact, to some degree, mitigates the reduced production of the vintage:"Better to get less really good wine than more not-so-good," as he figures it.Davis's wines fall somewhere between the two camps of Sonoma region styles, neither big nor lean.He said that he definitely picks "with an eye on ripeness, but ripeness shouldn't have a negative connotation-- otherwise you're talking about underripe fruit and tart wines."The Laguna Road/Trenton area where his vineyard sits is ideal for this style, he said, because "ripening happens slowly and steadily, with less risk of heat spikes and also less chance of stunted maturity from being too cold."
