My recent tasting with Tom Garrett at Dakota Shy was instructive on so many levels. Starting with the 2022s, the wines give a very clear sense of which sites struggled with the heat and which fared better. Garrett explained that the intense heat burned off 30-50% of the natural tannins in the wines. As a result, he favored longer macerations at higher temperatures, with more pumpovers than usual to help build structure and depth in the wines. Overall, the 2022s are solid across the board. The 2023s are wonderfully precise, vivid young wines that have a ton to offer, starting with gorgeous expressions of place.

This is a strong set of wines from Dakota Shy. Tom Garrett pursues a slightly more flamboyant style than he does at Detert, which is evident in tasting the two ranges side by side. As good as the wines are, a bit less forced winemaking would likely allow greater articulation of site character. Even so, the 2021s are terrific and sure to please Dakota Shy fans. At this stage, the 2022s come across as a bit light, as is typical of so many wines in this vintage.
